7 Do’s & Don’ts of Weight Loss

Don’t compare yourself to others. While it’s a good idea to partner with friends for support and motivation, avoid comparing your goals and results to theirs. You have a unique set of qualities, habits and goals and comparing yourself to others will only give you a false sense of confidence or work in the opposite direction and create feelings of inadequacy.

Do Stay positive. There has been much hype in the recent past about the law of attraction. Whether you believe it or not, your thoughts affect your level of motivation and your level motivation affects your actions. Self doubt and a negative mind set will do you no good, especially in an area where consistency is key.

Don’t focus on setbacks. If you don’t meet your fitness goals for the day or week, shake it off. Learn from it. Identify areas where you went wrong and plan to do better moving forward. Developing a lifestyle that promotes weight maintenance is a process and takes time to build discipline.

Do combine diet and exercise. Losing weight not only provides aesthetic benefits. Yes; you will feel wonderful as your waistline diminishes and your clothes fit better but this is only part of the equation. Maintaining a healthy weight improves organ function, circulation and skin to name a few.

Don’t follow every weight loss trend. Be open minded but don’t be a band wagoner. Pay attention to your patterns. Do what is safe, healthy, feasible and works for you. Trends will come and go but there are some tried and true methods to losing weight like eating healthy foods and moving your body.

Do share your weight loss experience with others. Sharing your highs and lows with those whom you feel comfortable helps hold you accountable for the goals you set and allows you to give and receive encouragement and support.
